Notes |
- Here is the picture I mentioned.
This is the story of Eliza, my great-grandmother on my Father's side. She grew up in a large family, one of the eldest. Eliza fell in love when she was only 17yrs with a young man of 19yrs who sadly had TB. He died before they could be married bywhich time she was pregnant.
This was a cause for deep shame in those days and her parents threw her out. The baby, my grandfather, was born in the poor house, an institution for those with nothing, sometimes a very harsh place.
Her family relented after the baby was born - her mother was still having babies herself - so they took him as their own son and my grandfather grew up up thinking for a long time no doubt that his grandparents were his parents. But we don't think the rift was ever healed between Eliza and her parents as she was never spoken of.
To throw out your teenage girl like that seems inconceivable nowadays, doesn't it.
Beautiful Eliza unsurprisingly went on to marry and have children in wedlock, some of whom survived (a lot of children died before they reached 5yrs in those days). She made good.
The story continues. It so happened that Alice, her youngest sister, fell pregnant in just the same way, before marriage. Not only was Eliza beautiful but now showed she had inner steel: she took her sister into her own home, where the baby was born. This boy became the mystery man of our childhood, whose relationship was never entirely clear. Now we know! He was shipped off to Canada as a 14yr old but made good in America, where he died a good old age.
Eliza and Alice remained close all their lives, Eliza growing into good old age but Alice dying before 60. I have a feeling Alice didn't have Eliza's inner steel and was broken hearted about the son she couldn't keep.
