Notes |
- Secretary to Rudyard Kipling, author of 'The Jungle Book' etc.
a family tree for the Gardner-Smiths exists going back to the late eighteenth century.
According to Dorothy, the Gardner Smiths are descended from an admiral of the blue, called Gardner, whose portait hangs in the Government House(?) in Jamaica. The connection, if it exists, is not shown on thefamily tree, the mother of the man who changed his name from Smith to Gardner Smith not being identified.
There was an admiral of the blue, who subsequently became a Lord of the Admiralty and Commander-in-Chief, called Alan Gardner, 1st Lord Gardner, who married Susanna Hyde of Hyde Hall, Jamaica. Lord Gardner died in Jamaica in 1809. The title is now dormant, which means that there is assumed to be a current Lord Gardner but it is not known who he is. See the Dictionary of National Biography for more information.
