In 883, he acquired the relics of Eulogius (a martyr) from the Emire Muhammad I and the focus of the cult of martyrs was transferred from Cordoba to Oviedo
Hijo de Ordoño I, fue coronado rey de Asturias en 888. Su reino comprendía Asturias, parte de Galicia y parte de lo que hoy es Castilla la Vieja. Conquisto Zamora a los moros en 893. En 884 fundó Burgos.
Con Alfonso III el reino asturiano se extendió desde el Cantábrico hasta el Modego, el Duero y las Vascongadas y su centro se desplazó hacia el sur, esbozando las piezas fundamentales en que se distribuirían sus territorios: León y Castilla.
Encarceló a su hijo García porque conspiró contra él. Abdicó en sus tres hijos: León a García, Galicia a Ordoño y Asturias a Fruela.
Murió en 910 y está enterrado en la Catedral de Oviedo.
