He spent his early childhood at Drakensteyn Castle in Lage Vuursche. He went to the Montessori Kindergarten in Baarn (1972-73), the Nieuwe Baarnse School (1973-79) and the Baarns Lyceum (1979-81). In 1981 the family moved to The Hague, where he went to the Eerste Vrijzinnig Christelijk Lyceum (1981-83). Then he attended the Atlantic College in Llantwit Major, Wales (1983-85). He joined the Royal Marine before he started to study history at the University of Leiden (1987-93).

Prince Willem-Alexander completed his military service before enrolling as a history student in the Arts Faculty of Leiden University in 1987. During his student years, he lived in a house on the city's Rapenburg. His studies included the following subjects: general and Dutch history, economic history, political science and constitutional law, EC law, international law, human rights and economics. The Prince concluded his studies with a dissertation on the Dutch response to France's decision under President de Gaulle to leave NATO's integrated command structure. On 2 July 1993, the Prince was awarded a degree in history.

      Military career

The Prince of Orange performed his military service in the Royal Netherlands Navy from August 1985 to January 1987. After several months' training at the Royal Naval Institute in Den Helder, the Prince served on board the frigates HMS Tromp and HMS Abraham Crijnssen. In 1988, he received refresher training, serving as a duty officer on board the frigate HMS Van Kinsbergen.

After graduating in 1993, the Prince gained his Military Pilot's Licence with 334 Transport Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The licence was presented to him by his grandfather, Prince Bernhard.

In 1994, the Prince spent several months at the Netherlands Defence College, studying aspects of the work of the Royal Netherlands Army and Air Force. He also paid a number of working visits to the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps and the Royal Military Constabulary. In 1995 and 1996, Prince Willem-Alexander visited the troops stationed in Bosnia, the Dutch-Germany Army Corps, and NATO manoeuvres in Norway.

In 1995, the Prince of Orange was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, Major in the Royal Netherlands Army, attached to the Grenadiers and Rifles Guards Regiment, and Squadron Leader in the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Since 1997, he has held the rank of Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Army Reserve, infantry division, and Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force Reserve. The Prince is also Aide-de-Camp Extraordinary to Her Majesty the Queen

Willem-Alexander is spontaneous, impatient, social and obstinate. He likes skiing, diving, horse-riding, speed skating (he skated the famous 200 km long 11-cities race in 1986), sailing, flying (he worked for the Flying Doctors in Africa for a few weeks in 1990), reading, drawing, going out and drinking a beer, music and smoking. He ran the New York marathon in 1992. Since the beginning of 1998 he is a member of the International Olympic Committee. He lives on his own in The Hague in a house next to the working palace of his mother.
