    • Who along with his brother Gardiner Greene started what would become Howland & Aspinwall, one of the foremost shipping merchant ventures of New York.

      Moved from Connecticut to New York, where he was a coffee broker until he joined his brother to form G.G.& S.Howland. Samuel Howland prospered along with his brother as their firm grew to one of New York’s largest mercantile concerns, doing business with Europe, the Mediterranean and the Pacific too. The brothers retired from active business in 1837, remaining partners with a nominal value of 100'000 $ in the firm which was taken over by their sons and nephew W.H.Aspinwall.
