      " The Daily Oregonian
      Thursday Morning Sept. 29, 1881
THE LATE EARL OF AIRLIE -- Lord Airlie [David Graham Ogilvy, seventh Earl of Airlie] died on Sunday morning at the Windsor Hotel, at Denver, Col. after only one day's illness. The cause was a congestive chill, occasioned by contracting a sever cold. His body was embalmed and forwarded the following evening to Dundee for burial at Cortachy castle , alongside his ancestors. It will be accompanied by his son, Lord Ogilvy, [David Stanley William Ogilvy] now the [eighth]earl of Airlie, who was with him at the time of his death. The late earl was president of the Oregonian Railway, of the Dundee Mortgage Company, of the Oregon and Washington Mortgage Bank, of the Dundee Land Company, and of the Braine Cattle Company. He was one of the originators and promoters of the Oregon Trust Company and bank in 1873, along with Mr. Wm. Reid, who was then United States consul at Dundee. He was a liberal in the house of lords, and a firm supporter of Mr. Gladstone's government, and was one of those enlightened noblemen of Scotland who believed that in time the house of lords would be abolished in England. He was one of the sixteen representative peers of Scotland regularly sent to the house of lords by the votes of his brother peers of Scotland. He owned a greater portion of the Steven's donation land claim near Portland (Terwiliger's Addition) said to have been bought for his daughter, Lady Maud Ogilvy, who visited this city with him last fall. He was beloved by all his tenantry and last year gave them volunteer reductions of their rents on account of bad crops in Scotland last year. His several estates in Scotland will now go by heritary descent to his eldest son, the present earl, who under the late disentail acts of Great Britain has power to dispose and sell these estates without the consent of his own children. This death is much regretted by Mr. Reid, resident manager of the institution at whose head Lord Airlie stood, as well as by all the gentlemen connected with the enterprise."

"Airlie, POLK [county] This was the southern terminus of the narrow gauge line of the Oregonian Railway Company, Limited. The tracks were subsequently widened to standard gauge, and the property acquired by the Southern Pacific Company. The station was named for the Earl of Airlie of Scotland. He was president of the Oregonian Railway Company, Limited, and visited Oregon during the course of construction. Most of the track on the Airlie branch was taken out in 1929."

A branch of my family lived in Airlie, OR years ago and they said the railway was used to haul logs out of the woods in the area.
I hope you found this interesting.
