  • Notes
    • 2nd Earl of Traquair
In 1642, as Lord Linton, he was a commissioner to apprehend border rebels. In 1645 he negotiated with Parliament for his father's partial pardon and fine. In September 1645 he joined Montrose with a troop of horse, but on his father's orders he withdrew the night before the battle of Philiphaugh. In 1648 he took part in Hamilton's disastrous campaign into England and, together with his father, was imprisoned at Nantwich, though he himself was soon released while his father remained a prisoner until 1651.

He then became Commissioner for County Peebles in 1652. In 1661 he collected the king's annuity. On 13 October 1664 he was granted two years' royal protection from arrest for debt. On 25 July 1665 he was found guilty of a riot against Walter Scott, a tenant of the Earl of Southesk, and was committed to Edinburgh Castle. He died in April 1666.
