    • 4th Earl of Chester Heir was maternal nephew John le Scot, Earl of Huntington. Rec'd earldom of Leicester aft John siezed it from Simon V de Montfort. Feb 1230-1231 Gave earldom of Leicester to his cousin Simon VI de Montfort. One of the most powerful magnates in the realm. One of the few barons John kept in confidence throughout his reign. 1218 Aft yrs of enmity, allied with Llywelyn Fawr Prince of Wales. Known as somewhat dour & taciturn, but steadfast & couragious. As a boy, hostage of King Stephen for his father's good behavior. After his father's rebellion, sentenced to be hung but Stephen reprieved him.
