    • Irish descent
      moved from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1779 with his wife and their 5 children. They bought a log house and 450 acres near the Rockbridge/Augusta County line. Robert operated the grist mill on the property and became a quite prosperous farmer.
      By 1812, tax rolls showed him owning 4 slaves and 7 horses. His properties included a sawmill, a cider mill, a distillery, two grain mills, and a smokehouse.

      children.
      Robert is known as Robert of Rockbridge or Robert of Walnut
      Grove.
      In 1779 he sold h is farm and removed to Rockbridge Co. VA, the
      land now sits on the actual coun ty lines and is maintained
      through a family trust by Virginia Tech. They boug ht 500 acres
      with a large log house where Robert McCormick Jr. was born.
      He i s the grandfather of Cyrus McCormick of reaper fame.

      1755 he moved from Cumberland Co., PA to Juniata Co., PA,
      locating near his brothers Hugh and Thomas. They frequent ly
      suffered from incursions from the Indians and on one occasion
      they were dr iven from their homes. In 1779 he moved to
      Rockbridge Co. VA serving in the V irginia Line under General
      Greene in the Carolina campaign during the Revoluti on and being wounded at the baattle of Guilford Courthouse. He had many of t he characteristics of the rugged and persevering race from which he traced des cent. He was pious, earnest, and in all
      things honorable, in religion a Presb yterian and an elder in the Old Providence Church of Augusta County, VA. He w as held in high esteem by his neighbors and associates was exemplary in his h abits, and his home and daily life were marked by colonial
      simplicity.
