      was also a supporter of the queen, but in the shifting politics of the time he later supported her son, James VI, becoming a Privy Councillor. James was entertained by the Somervilles in such splendor that they burdened themselves with debt and had to sell their estates at Carnwath, When the Scots nobility was ranked in 1606 after the union of the crowns, the name Somerville did not appear.

      son and heir, born about 1539; was, as MASTER OF SOMERVILLE, present in Parliament [SCT], 1 August 1560. As a supporter of the Queen he attended the meeting of her party at Linlithgow, 9 April 1570, and the "Marian" Parliament in the Tolbooth at Edinburgh, 12 and 13 June 1571. Thereafter he sided with the Regent Morton, being P.C. [SCT], 27 June 1572-February 1577/8. He sat in Parliament [SCT], 24 November 1572-29 July 1587; and took part in the King's march to Stirling, April 1584, and in the campaign against the Earl of Huntly, April 1589. He married (contract 11 February 1556/7), Eleanor, daughter of George (SETON), 4th LORD SETON [SCT], by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter of John (HAY), 3rd LORD HAY OF YESTER [SCT]. He deserted her in 1587.(i) He died 24 March 1597 at Raploch (the house of Gavin Hamilton), and was buried at Cambusnethan. His widow, who was living 13 February 1602, died about 1603, and was buried at Seton.
