- He built an interesting house which is now the oldest remaining in thislocalit y. Immediately below the mouth of Paint Creek, it is placed withit's back belo w the river, facing the ear ly public road that passed it'sdoor. Today it must look at the roadbed of the main line of th e C&ORailroad. The highway being rel ocated and parallelling the railroad onthe opposite side . Constructed in 1825 of bricks burned on the bank ofthe creek and now painted dark red, thi s house is in splendid conditionand it's a rarity that it is architecturally unchanged . Fe w early housesexist that have not undergone at least some alterations and it is a sadfact, bu t indubitably true that they are usually deplorable ones. T hefirst thing to go is always th e little square entrance portion, but inthis house it remains unaltered and stands staunchl y supported by whitecolumns, pla in, simple, and harmonious. Although the house is twostorie s in height, it's r ather flat roof makes it appear lower. A storyand a half wing extending t he ba ck is actually a small house in itselfbut is connected to the main building by a breeze way connected on thewindward side by heavy doors fastened by rod lock s. It is said the small house was built first and used for living quarters unti l the houseproper was completed.
The interior is in it's original condition with wide pine floorboards, rather plain mantles wi th curved tops, and grooved sides and low wainscotaround the first floor rooms. In the centa l hallway the wainscot ispaneled horizontally with boards 20 inches wide. An interesting de t ailis the wood strip around the wall with pegs for hanging hats and coats.Th e stairway is fa irly narrow and steep, curving sharply as the hallwayis small. A pair of long french entranc e doors have an inside iron barslanting across t he width, a surprising feature, the single d oor at therear of the hall being a lso barred in the same way. One wonders if thiswas a civi l war precaution. Bot h doors still have their largeEnglish-made locks made with the Britis h Coat of Arms.
The windows retain their original wavy glass, one of the most costly andmost difficult to sec ure of all the items needed in early houseconstructi on. Both upper and lower sash are cut in to 12 panes and theunusual hand hewn s hutters trim the windows. A small frame buildingstand s in the side yard and wa s used by Mr. Hansford as his office. Herehe reckoned his account s and looked after the affairs of the farm.
Mr. Hansford attended school in Lewisburg at the Early Academy and wile astudent there he mar ried Sara Herndon Frazier of G reenbrier County. Anintelligent and well-read woman she also p ossessed unusual physical vigorand lived to the extreme age of 94. She is buried with other s o f herfamily in the Hansford Cemetary on the nearby hill.
