    • came to Beatrice NE by covered wagon. Information on the family from the life story of Lynda Franzetta McCormick, their granddaughter.
1870 Fremont Co IA census, p.40, property 173 lists Franklin Kuhns, age 45, farmer, b. in PA, valuation 150/700, Ester age 43, b. in PA, Leander, age 19 b. in PA, Mary age 15, b. in PA, Joseph age 9, born in PA and Francis age 4, born in PA.
Franklin's birth and marriage may have taken place in Pittsfield, Warren, PA or possibly they were married in Youngstown, Allegheny Co. PA. The age of their youngest child, Francis - 4 yrs old - plus the fact they are listed in the 1870 IA census,
would indicate they may have come west to NE, then IA from PA with Humes Thomas and Sarah E. McCormick immediately after their wedding in 1867 in Warren Co, PA. Frances was b. in PA and was about 1 yr old at the time his sister was married. A
Franklin Koontz is listed in Limestone Twp in Warren Co, PA in the 1860 PA p. 19, line 14. This appears to be the right person. Ester's age is shown to be 35 yrs instead of 32 yrs, however. The
children are Elizabeth ae 11, James L ae 9 and Mary ae 4. Also in this household are Catharine Conkrite ae 18, a domestic, Samuel Blano ae 21, school teacher, John L Seargent ae 24 a laboroer and Andrew J Westfall ae 34 a laboror with his son James
ae 10. Franklin is shown to be a farmer with real estate value of $300 and personal value of $180. Both Franklin and Esther are shown to be been born in PA as were the children. Also, both parents are indicated as to be able to read and write. Th
date on the census was 9 June 1860, Limestone Twp, Warren Co, PO Tidioute, PA.
Frank Kuntz is also listed in Alegheny Co PA, in Lower St. Clair Twp, pg 280 for 1860 - this might be a state census(?). Probably not the right Frank.
A Minnie B Kuhns 1873-1940 is listed in the Cemetery Index for Udell Twp, Appanoose Co Cemetery. Glen McCormick often spoke of"Aunt Minnie Kuhns", could this be her? She would be several years younger than Franklin. In "General Index of Deeds,
Fremont Co, IA are listing for a Frederick Kuhns: Kuhn, Fredrick bought from Dennis Mahoney & wf. filed Dec 15, 1875, date of instrument Sep 3 1875 arranty deed. Bk V p. 316 SE of SW 1/4 Sec 23, Twp 69, Range 41, 40 ac Kuhn, Frederick bought from
