• Notes

  Amenia, in the Oblong, is six miles from Sharon, CT. The Richmond family was one of several "Squatters from the East" who settled in the Green River Valley in anticipation of the Massachusetts land grants of 1757. The wilderness East of the Hudson River was disputed land and a colony peopling the area could claim it. The colony of Mass. decided to try acquisition by colonization. The six mile square area would be settled in 100 acre claims. The Spencer family probably started the movement which had brothers, cousins, and friends applying for grants which they sold for a few pounds after the grants were approved to the relatives who settled there. Anne Powell, who married James Spencer may have given the family members the opportunity to participate. John Dean, a second cousin to Elizabeth Carpenter was one of the participants. Truman and Elizabeth may have moved the 35 miles north to Spencertown or may have stayed near Amenia. They did receive one of the grants.
