  • Notes
    • Notley was a redhead along with many of his descendants according to Suzanne Coats of Mississippi. Notley had 300 acres of land surveyed on Nov 3, 1784 by Thomas Lewis. It was "situate in the District of Camden on Flinton's Creek, a Branch of Sandy River." Two sides of it bordered on vacant land and the other two sides by Thomas Frankland and James Gore. (C-1705: SC Plats, V.12, p. 267)
He was a witness to a deed when William and Frances Coats sold land to John Turner or Furnas in 1791.
He is likely the Notley Coats who purchased slaves? from Charles Coate in Jan. 1794 in Chester Co., SC. The Bill of Sale can be found in BK D, pg. 69, 70 & 71 in Chester Co. records. (C-1548)
Notley was listed as a trustee of Lower Sandy River (Baptist Church) in the year 1800 when it was decided to build a larger structure and move it's location on Ashford Ferry Road, five miles from Chester in Chester Co., SC. (C-1929)
In that same year, he is in the census records for Chester Co., SC, p. 82, with the following patterns. He and his wife are over age 45. He as two sons between 10 and 16, one between 16 and 26, and 1 daughter between 10 and 16. There is a 3 in the last column, possibly meaning he had 3 slaves??
He bought 50 more acres on Flinton Creek in 1801.
He sold land to Clayborn Wright in 1803 in Chester Co.
He deeded his land to James Coates and Henry Head in 1804 in Chester Co., SC Deed Book M, p. 331-335. It is difficult to read, but it looks like when the deed was filed for James Coates purchase on Oct. 22, 1806, Notley was listed as Notley, late... indicating death. He does not appear in deed records after this date. (C-912, 1780)
In his will he bequeths his 300 acres to his wife, Franky's use. His daughter Peggy is not yet of age. His son William receives the half of the land not bequethed to Peggy. His wife and James Coats (probable brother) were his executors. Slaves named Esther, Hannah and Jesse were listed in the will. (C-1716)
