    • 10th Duke of Northumberland
      Duke from 1940 till 1988, a period which marked a long, successful transformation of a great ducal estate to meet the changing requirements of the second half of the twentieth century. This Duke was recognised as a foremost agriculturist of his day, whose deep interest in related sciences let him, in 1968, to chair the government investigation into bovine foot and mouth disease and the Medical Research Council.

      He maintained his family's high standards of public service. Among many duties, he was Lord Steward of the Royal Household, Lord Lieutenant of the county, Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Chairman of the Medical Research Council, with many other commitments to, among other interests, industry, agriculture, historical research, wildlife and the territorial armed services. He was Master of the Percy Foxhounds and managed some 80,000 acres. His time was spent mainly at Alnwick Castle with prolonged summer visits to Syon.
