  • Notes
    • Emperor in Nicea, ca.1192-1254. Said to have suffered from epilepsy, about 1212 he married Eirene Dukaina Komnene Laskarina, daughter of Emperor Theodoros Laskaris. Early in 1222 she gave birth to a son, but later that year had a fall from her horse and from then on was unable to have any more children. Also in 1222, at the age of about thirty, he became Emperor in Nicea and, in 1225, recovered most of the Byzantine Empire. His wife, as Sister Eugenia, went to live in a convent where she died in the summer of 1239. In 1244 he married Costanza von Hohenstaufen, illegitimate daughter of Emperor Friedrich II, who had been the mistress of Emperor Michael VIII. However, no more children were born.
