16. | Boleslaw III Polski was born on 20 Aug 1086 (son of Wladyslaw I Herman Polski and Judith von Böhmen); died on 28 Oct 1138. Notes:
Boleslaus III, Duke of Poland. The Kingdom of Poland had been divided by his father, Ladislaus Herman, between Boleslaus and his elder brother Zbigniew, whose legitimacy was disputed. Zbigniew was supported by the Holy Roman emperor and other powers; however, Boleslaus defeated Zbigniew and reunited the Kingdom. He routed in 1109 Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich V at Hundsfeld and warred against Bohemia, Hungary, and Kiev. Having also regained Pommern, which Mieszko II had lost to Denmark, Boleslaus entrusted the Christianization of its inhabitants to the Bishop of Bamberg. In 1135 at Merseburg he signed a treaty with Holy Roman Emperor Lothar II, by which he received Pommern and Rügen as fiefs of the empire. Vainly seeking to prevent the disintegration of his Kingdom, Boleslaus altered the law of succession of his dynasty. Among his sons, Kasimir II was the most notable.
Boleslaw married Salome von Berg-Schelklingen. Salome (daughter of Heinrich I von Berg and Adelheid von Vohburg) died in 1144. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
