HENRY (WRIOTHESLEY), EARL OF SOUTHAMPTON and BARON WRIOTHESLEY, only son and heir, born 6 October 1573, at Cowdray, Sussex; styled LORD WRIOTHESLEY till 1581;'a ward of the Queen; educated at Cambridge (St. John's College]; matriculated 11 December 1585; M.A. 6 June 1589; admitted Gray's Inn, 29 February 1587/8; incorporated M.A. of Oxford, 19 August 1592. As Captain of the Garland he served under the Earl of Essex in the "Island Voyage" to the Azores, 1597, being knighted there by him in October; and as General of Horse (appointed by him), 15 April-July, was in Ireland under Essex, April-September 1599. He was again in Ireland under Mountjoy, April-July 1600. For his part in the ill-fated insurrection of the Earl of Essex, 8 February, he was found guilty and attainted, 19 February 1600/1, whereby all his honours were forfeited. From February 1660/1 to April 1603, he was a prisoner in the Tower of London. By the new King, James I, he was, however, greatly favoured, and he received a grant of pardon and restitution, 16 May 1603; nominated K.G. 25 June, and installed 9 July 1603; Captain of the Isle of Wight, 7 July 1603 till his death. He was created, 21 July 1603, BARON WRIOTHESLEY OF TITCHFIELD, co. Southampton, and EARL OF SOUTHAMPTON, with "place and precedence as previous to his deprivation"; and was restored in blood by Act of Parliament, 18 April 1604. One of the Queen's Council and Master of her Game, October 1603; Joint Lord Lieutenant of Hants, 30 March 1604, and Vice-Admiral thereof before August 1608; Keeper of the New Forest, 14 January 1606/7; a Councillor of the Virginia Company, 23 May 1609, becoming Treasurer and Governor, 28 June 1620-June 1624; and for the plantation of New England, 3 November 1620. He accompanied the King to Scotland in May 1617 and was sworn P.C. 30 April 1619. For his opposition to the Duke of Buckingham he was arrested and committed to the custody of the Dean of Westminster, 15 June-18 July 1621. As Colonel of a regiment of volunteers in the service of the Elector Palatine, he went to Holland in August 1624. He married, clandestinely (thereby incurring the Queen's heavy displeasure), shortly before 30 August 1598, Elizabeth [c] (one of the Maids of Honour), daughter of John VERNON, of Hodnet, Salop, by Elizabeth, sister of Walter, 1st EARL OF ESSEX, daughter of Sir Richard DEVEREUX. He died 10 November 1624, of the pestilence at Bergen-op-Zoom, in Holland, and was buried 28 December at Titchfield, aged 51. She was living 23 November 1655. [CP 12[1]:128-30]

Chamberlain writes, 30 August 1598, "Mrs Vernon is from the Court, and lies in Essex house; some say she hath taken a venew under the girdle and swells upon it, yet she complaines not of fowle play, but sayes the Erle of Southampton will justifie it; and it is bruted, underhand, that he was latelie here fowre dayes [from France] in great secret of purpos to marry her, and effected it accordingly."
