Notes |
- Continental leading man with talent to go along with his charm. Aumont began his career on the stage in Paris, where his popularity in the 1930s led to many film assignments, including Jean de la lune (1931), Maria Chapdelaine (1934), Tarass Boulba (1936), Drole de drame (1937, also known as Bizarre, Bizarre and La Belle Etoile (1938). After serving with distinction in the early days of World War 2 (earning both the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor) he emigrated to the U.S. and was signed by MGM to appear in the wartime dramas Assignment in Brittany (1943, billed as Pierre Aumont) and The Cross of Lorraine (also 1943). He became a familiar presence in Hollywood movies, playing opposite such leading ladies as Ginger Rogers Heartbeat 1946), Yvonne De Carlo Song of Scheherazade 1947, as Rimski-Korsakov), and Jean Simmons Hilda Crane 1956). He married Maria Montez, with whom he starred in Siren of Atlantis (1948); she died in 1951.
After the war, Aumont divided his time between the U.S. and Europe, and worked on stage and television as well as films. Other feature credits include Lili (1953), Royal Affairs in Versailles (1954), John Paul Jones (1959), The Devil at 4 O'Clock (1961), Castle Keep (1969), The Happy Hooker, Mahogany, Catherine & Co (all 1975), Blackout (1978), Something Short of Paradise (1979), and Sweet Country (1986), but his best latter-day opportunity came when François Truffaut gave him a key role in his valentine to moviemaking, Day for Night (1973). His third wife is actress Marisa Pavan. His autobiography, "Sun and Shadow," was published in 1976.
