  • Notes
    • King of the Britons
Past middle age, he is said to have married Ronwin, daughter of the Saxon invader, Horst.

      !Baglan, fo. 323 [p. 260]:
Gwrthairne alias Vrtiger, King of Brittayne, ap Gwrthenay ap Gwyddawl ap Gwynddoley ap Gloyw alias Claudius, Emperor of Rome.

      See also Gorthegyrn.

Vortigern was succeeded by Emyrs Wledig (called Ambrosius by the Romans) as the overking of Britain.
Whether Emyrs ever had a brother who was called, not named, Uther Pendragon (terrible head dragon) is doubtful, and that his brother fathered King Arthur is even less believable.

Ninnius says Vortigern also had a son, Faustus, by his own daughter!
An interesting theory has been advanced that he also had a son by the Saxon girl, the Cerdic who has the Celt name but whom history says was a Saxon who was the first king of Wessex. His son also had a suspiciously Celt name, Cynwrig.

In circa 425, a king whom the Celts called Blessed Custinnen was killed, leaving 3 youngish sons. The elder of these sons was made king under the regency of Vortigern, but was soon killed by the latter so he might become king. (referring to the king of all Britains; he was already a local king) This murdered king supposedly had two younger brothers, neither of which was old enough at that time to challenge Vortigern, but took refuge in Brittany. The eldest of these brothers, Ambrosius, came home to Britain when Vortigern grew older and the latter fled. Some say Ambrosius burned his fortress to kill him, others say Vortigern died in obscurity.
