  • Notes
    • Thirty-one years after the death of his wife, Thomas Newman Frederick Bardwell of Bolton Hall, died while staying at the Lyndhurst Hotel in Folkestone.

His death came suddenly on the 28th day of March, 1931. The hand-written will that he left had been written on July 28, 1920

Thomas Newman Frederick Bardwell, Esquire, was a Deputy Lieutenant, a Justice of the Peace for the East Riding of Yorkshire, and a Barrister-at-law. He continued to reside at the family seat of the Bardwells--Bolton Hall near Wilberfoss in the County of York.

His very brief, three-paragraph will contains the following provisions in favour of his eldest son.

I give devise and bequeath all the Real and Personal Estate of which I shall be possessed or entitled to at the time of my decease unto my dear son Thomas Garnett Newman Bardwell absolutely.

And I appoint my said son the executor to this my Will and hereby revoke all previous wills by me at any time heretofore made.

In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twenty.

Thomas Bardwell [senior] is remarkably short-winded in his half-page Will.
It is evident that he actually drafted and wrote out the Will in his own handwriting. [Perhaps lawyers are briefer and straight to the point when they are working for themselves instead of for a paying client].
