Sluman attended district school in N.Y. & then went to Gaines, Royalton & Yakes Academies for further education. He was a farmer in N.Y. until comming to Paris (Twp), Kent County in 1846. They went from Buffalo to Detroit by water. He lived on a farm for 14 years. He was a farmer, twice a sheriff(1862-1864 and 1866-1868). Was appointed by President Johnson as 4th District IRS Collector (Mich) and reappointed by President Grant - a total of 15 years as collector of Internal Revenue.
1871-G.R. Saving Bank, G.R. Electric Light & Power Co. Mar.22, 1880 (incorporator) - this I believe was part of the 1st "water works" company in Grand Rapids, Mich. (he was one of 5 owners). Sluman was a Paris Townsphip School Inspector; a Justice of the Peace for 4 years; a Township Supervisor for 7 years; Founder of the Kent County Agricultural Society (Pres. 1 yr, Sec. for several years, & on the Executive Committee for 6 years); he also organized the Congregational Church - Paris Township. (Info from History of Kent County Pub. 1881 & Story of Grand Rapids - orig. written in 1898).

He was an excelent woodworker and made tables and "hankie boxes" for all his daughters and daughter-in-laws. Some still exsist and are owned by Norma Tanner. He kept detailed Journals that are in the Kentwood Library, Kent Co., MI.
