- SANFORD CHARLES GLADDEN (b.-1902)
Sanford Charles Gladden, the third child of Burt and Avis Aline (Hawkins)
Gladden, was born July 6,1902 in Whiting, Miss issippi County, Mo.
He attended grammar schools in Whiting, Mo., Monroe, La., and Batesville,
Miss., graduating from the Batesville High School in June 19 20 with the
second highest honors of the class.
While attending high school in Batesville, he worked for the local movie
theatre (the Rex Theatre), firs t as janitor and operator of the
player-piano (this was before the days of so und movies), and later as
cashier.
In the fall of 1920 he entered the Unive rsity of Mississippi, where he
specialized in ancient languages. For one year he had a room in Taylor
Hall, a residence hall for men students (now replace d by faculty
apartments). The next year the Gladden family moved to Oxford, a djacent
to the University, and he thereafter lived with his family,
During his junior year at the University he became interested in radio
telegraphy, a nd became one of the first operators of the University
broadcasting station ( WCBH, with a power of 10 watts). His interest
shifted at that time from the s tudy of the classics to physics; and for
the rest of his college program he s pecialized in physics. He received
his bachelor's degree in June 1924.
For the Period 1920-1925 he worked Part-time as a clerk in the J E
Neilson Compan y, a department store in Oxford. In September 1925 he was
awarded a graduate assistantship in Physics at the University of
Kentucky, where he obtained the master of science degree in 1928. From
then until 1950 he followed the profe ssion of teaching in colleges and
universities in the southeastern and southw estern parts of the United
States. From 1930 to 1945 he was on the staff of t he University of
Mississippi.
In December 1950 he accepted a position as Ph ysicist with the Central
Radio Propagation Laboratory of the National Bureau Of Standards. He was
at first stationed in Washington, D.C.,
but transferre d in April 1954 with other staff members to the new
facility established at B oulder, Colo. Here he has since made his home.
He has never married.
Sanford Charles Gladden, with assistance from his sister, Emma, and
brother, Paul, r esearched and privately published numerous books of
family history and geneal ogy containing the results of many years of
effort begun years before by thei r mother, Avis Aline (Hawkins) Gladden.
At least some of these books were ha rd-bound and 100 copies of each were
usually printed. Distribution was made to selected family members and to
various libraries chosen by him.
