  • Notes
    • - Emigrated to Canada with husband Edmund about 1851/52.

      - Listed as a "Canadian Methodist" on 1881 Census in Nassagaweya Township, Ontario

According to Fannie Harmer DeLap, Edmund supposedly worked as a groomsman/stableboy at the Boots family estate. Fannie also said her mother Mary Boots was an heiress to the Boots pharmaceutical fortune (UK). She also said Mary was disinherited for marrying Edmund Harmer, a stableboy. She further related that her mother was waited on hand & foot by husband & children in accustomed style of an English Lady after they got done working in the fields. All of this has been disproven; according to info sent from John Sayers of the Harmer Family Association. Mary Boots does not appear to have been of the Boots pharmaceutical family, but from a long line of laborers, etc in Sussex. Fannie's stories were not always sound, apparently this one was not.

Another oral history "tale", but maybe with more truth to it, is that Mary was raised by two aunts (maybe her father Aaron Boots died while she was quite young?). Anyway, Mary's girls received hoop skirts from well off relatives in England when they were in Canada & Mary had to tell them how to put them on.
