  • Notes
    • King of France (1270- 1285).
Louis IX's second son succeeded his father in 1270 and was proclaimed king in Tunis, having accompanied his father on the crusade. In 1271, when his uncle, Alphonse of Poitiers, died, Philip III annexed the Poitou area and County of Toulouse to the Crown. He also inherited his brother, Pierre, the Perche area and County of Alen, con, in 1284. However, he gave the Comtat Venaissin to the Pope in 1274. His first wife, Isabella of Aragon, gave him four sons, including the future Philip the Fair. He became a widower and married again in 1274, to Mary of Brabant. With England and its new king, Edward I, Philip III the Bold continued the policy of peace instigated by his father and signed the Treaty of Amiens in 1279. This confinned the Treaty of Paris signed in 1258. After the `'Sicilian Vespers" (1282), during which the French were chased out of Sicily by King Peter III of Aragon, Pope Martin IV excommunicated the monarch of Aragon and attributed his kingdom to Charles of Valois, the King of France's son. Philip III then organised an expedition to conquer Aragon but it soon failed. The French fleet was destroyed and the King of France died during an epidemic in Perpignan (1285) to which he had retreated with his army. He was succeeded by his second son, Philip IV the Fair.
