Became heir to the Lee estate as a consequence of his elder brother John’s early death. A scholar and austere administrator, Richard Lee did little to add to his inheritance but managed to keep it essentially intact throughout tumultuous times, when the Bacon rebellion threatened Loyalists like Lee with imprisonment and confiscation of their estates. Richard Lee jr married Laetitia Corbin, the daughter of another Virginia landowner, and they had six children, mostly sons.
Leesylvania came into the Lee family from Henry Corbin who deeded it to his daughter Laetitia, of whom the first Richard Lee was a guardian. When Laetitia Corbin married Richard II, the property passed into the Lee family.
