    • 1866-71 Theologiestud. in Basel, Berlin und Tübingen. 1871 Pfarrer in Braunau, 1874 in Liestal und 1886 in Basel. 1891 wurde S. zum Antistes der Basler Kirche gewählt; 1897 wurde das Amt während der Entflechtung von Kirche und Staat abgeschafft. 1897-1918 war er Präs. des Kirchenrats und bis 1920 Pfarrer am Basler Münster. S. war als Theologe, Dichter, Dramatiker, Historiker und Kunsthistoriker publizistisch tätig. 1888-1923 Präs. der prot.-kirchl. Hilfsvereine. 1910 Dr. h.c. theol. der Univ. Basel.
