  • Notes
    • Donia State was bought in 1752 by Gilles Hessels Mesdag and Riemke Coopmans. They were the first burgers owning, and living in, that "noble" house in the country. They were proud of their possession. In their will they state that the "noble house" had to stay in the family. The glamour of the previous owners was thought to be transferred on the current ones. Now they, naturally, rented out the farm land.

One privilege was not transferred to Gilles Mesdag. It transpired that the hunt of swans had been exempted. Even legal action did not lead to results. However, Gilles now obtained the right to establish a burial chamber in the church of Burgwerd. And he used this right.

      [Sint Janspoort, Bolsward; 1793 Bendorp]

After his death, his coffin was transported from his house at the Grote Dylacker in Bolsward (see map inset), through the Saint-Jans gate at the northern tip of Bolsward (see picture) and by the ship-canal Bolsward-Leeuwarden to Burgwerd, then three times around the church before it was put to rest in the burial chamber. In the 19th century people mocked this by saying that Gilles had become skipper after his death, because in winter the chamber often flooded.

Gilles was the only Mesdag burried there. In the Napoleonic times, The Netherlands were a true republic for a while and all signs of aristocracy were removed from the public sphere, like coats of arms being removed from tombstones.

Gilles and Riemke lived alternatingly in Bolsward and Burgwerd. Both had children when they married and, together, at Donia in Burgwerd, they got one child, Taco. This boy Taco grew up in that noble house and after his marriage went to live mostly there.

After having been sold, Donia State was taken down in 1866-1870.
