    • Lid van het vrij dispuutgezelschap H.E.R.A. - 1942

Direkteur/Internist aan het R.K. Canissius Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis te Nijmegen.

One-third of the 470 people on the Stamboom (Dutch Family Tree) prepared for the Damme Reunion (1991) have Quirinus or Quirina as part of their name.

As you can see in the familytree, I am the oldest Enneking of my generation. As a baby I suffered from eczema, an allergic disease with skin manifestations. This causes much itching so my hands and feet were fastened with bandages to the sides of the craddle for some time. My grandmother, (Antoinette Enneking Hofman, 1868-1937 who had 14 children) was aware of the fact that St. Quirinus was a patron saint against skin diseases. So she ordered, that all future grand children would have the name Quirinus or Quirina as one of their first names. Her wish was followed without any exceptions. (In those years the wish of a mother was like a law!) All of the cousins of my generation (about 70) have the name. But in the next generation this tradition was not followed in all the family lines. I must confess, that also my first three children did not get the name. Alas, the saint took his revenge and my fourth child Maartin had terrible eczema again! So my fifth and last child got the name of Quirinus!

In some family lines the tradition was followed very strictly. For example, in the Enneking-Hoying line almost all the descendants got the name. Recently we received a birth announcement of a new Enneking, who still received the name of Quirinus. So you see, family traditions can be very strong!

Dr. Jules also sent an article about St. Quirinus' life and his landmark Basilica. Built between 1209-1230 in Neuss, near Düsseldorf, Germany. ED

Thomas Michael Petersen, 7127 Forsyth Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63105-2122 is a descendant of J. B. Frederich Enneking and he wrote about his geneology research. Tom has checked census data and city directories for information on this branch of the Enneking family in America. Across the river from Cincinnati in Newport, Kentucky he found in 1870 under Enneking a tailor shop and also a clothier during the same time Frederich had his tailor supply shop in Cincinnati.

Sometime ago, from the article on the Evansville, Indiana Ennekings. I received information that their ancestor Johann Heinrich born Sep. 24, 1792 was a tailor in Damme. Their son Heinrich Christopher, also was a tailor, he was born May 1, 1831, and emigrated to Cincinnati in 1849. Heinrich was followed shortly by his parents, sister Anna Maria and brother Bernard Heinrich. His parents died on board ship and were buried in Baltimore, Maryland. Bernard stayed with Heinrich until he moved to Evansville, Indiana.

The Dutch immigrant Herman F. C. Enneking in 1853 founded a textile mill at Breda in the South of Holland. Was Damme a textile center in the 1800’s?
      I.H. Go, S. van Nooten, A.S.M. Dofferhoff.
