  • Notes
    • of Broughton
    • Succeeded to Stanhope
    • second Baronet,

in 1679, on his father's resignation, received a Crown charter of the barony of Stanhope, including Langlawhill and half of the Kirklands of Broughtonshiels

He had also the lands of Ardnamurchan in Argyll, which he purchased in 1726.

(From A HISTORY OF PEEBLESSHIRE by James Walter Buchan, c1925-7 Vol 3. pg 448.)
    • Sir David MURRAY was described as a person of great worth and honor. He was active in Jacobite activities of the '15 (1715) and barely survived his involvement. He remained loyal to the Stuarts, promising to draw his sword whenever needed. However, after 1715, he did not conspire against the government. "When I got my life after the last affair (the '15) I entered into engagements that will not allow me to be active in contriving or carrying on measures against the government, tho' when there's a push to be made I'll venture all with the first."

(From: MURRAY MEMORIALS, by Robert Fitzroy Bell, 1898)
