Notes |
- From the Diary of John Baker of Horsham 1772
John Scawen, Lieut. in the Foot Guards, came into public notice later owing to his quarrel and duel with George Robert Fitzgerald.
(See below, Aug. 27, 1773.) The same year Scawen eloped with Mrs. Horneck, wife of a brother officer, while she and her husband were both staying at his house in Cork Street, Burlington Gardens (see below, June I, 1774) so that his career was not lacking in incident. He m. her subsequently and in 1776 (see June 20) he was staying with his wife at the Blunts house at Horsham. After losing a fortune at horse racing, he obtained an appointment at Madras, where he was joined by William, Samuel Blunt's son. He was the author of 'The Girl in Style,' a farce acted at Covent Garden, and of New Spain or Love in Mexico,' an opera, 1793, but neither of these pieces was successful. John Scawen dsp. and with him the Scawen family became extinct.
