  King of France (936-954). Louis, the son of Charles III the Simple and Eadgiva of Wessex, was taken to England by his mother when his father was deposed in 923 A.D. He was recalled in 936 A.D. by Hugh the Great, Duke of the Franks, and crowned king but he then had to spend much of his reign fighting Hugh. In 945 A.D, he was taken prisoner by the Vikings and was only freed, by Hugh, when he agreed to hand over the town of Laon. Louis IV sought assistance from King Otto of Germany and this gave him the upper hand. Hugh was forced to recognise his sovereignty in 950 and they signed a final peace treaty in 953 A.D. Louis IV died after a fall from a horse. He was succeeded by his son, Lothar.
