      He had 14 children and his wife, formerly a Miss Rowe. Two of his sons were also ministers, Robert and John.

      Rev. James Garnett was a Baptist minister and was pastor of Crooked Run Church (organized 1772) for 55 years. The members of his church grew from less than fifty members to more than three hundred. His last sermon was preached the Sunday before he died. The funeral services were conducted by his grandson James Garnett II, and succeeded to the pastorate of Crooked Run Church.
