    • In 1599 was hij medeoprichter en bewindhebber van de Brabantse Compagnie, en in 1602 was hij één van de 76 bewindhebbers die de VOC oprichtte. Hij was gouverneur-generaal van 1614-1615, en in zijn instructie stond vermeld dat hij predikanten en schoolmeesters moest aanstellen. Op de Molukken belette hij de Engelsen zich te vestigen op Ceram en deed hij een vergeefse poging het eiland Poeloei Ai (één van de Banda-eilanden) te veroveren.

      He was an important merchant and ship-owner in Amsterdam. Together with three other merchants, a small fleet of about seven ships were fitted out for trade with China in 1599. In 1602 he was one of the founders of the East India Company. In 1613 he was appointed Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and took up his appointment in 1614. He remained there to die in 1615 in Fort Jacatra
