  • Notes
    • 16th Lord of Shelton

Blomefield says that he was brother to Robert Shelton (d1423) and Sir Ralph Shelton junior (d1424).
Sir Ralph left no son and heir his brother William as his executor.
December 2 1404 he received a pardon from the King for not appearing in court to answer Walter de Watham concerning a debt of 20 marks (Patent Rolls Henry IV ii p 443).
February 8 1415 he received another pardon this time from Henry V for not appearing before justices of the bench of Henry IV to answer Robert Blake of London on a debt of 40 shillings (Patent Rolls Hen V i p 217).
November 12 1420 he received licence from the King to enlarge his manor in Shelton (Patent Rolls Hen V ii p 307).
In 1420 he presented to Robert Ride rector of the church in Hardwick (Blomefield v5 p 90).
December 5, 1416 he presented to the church in Scole (Blomefield v1 p133-135).
October 22 1417 he presented to the church in Frense (Blomefield v1 p 147).
In 1420 William had also been executor to John Tolle rector of Snoryng and he and his wife presented to the church there in that same year.
He died seized of the manors of Overhall and Netherhall in Shelton.
He also had the manor of Barrett in Hardwick and also possessed at his death the manors of Snoryng Magna, Thursford, Burgullion's in Kerdeston and Burnt Illegh in Suffolk.
He died in late 1421 or early 1422 for 27 February 1422 the King directed Edmund Wynter and Richard Elleswyk to have the custody and wardship of the late William Shelton's son John during his minority (Patent Rolls Hen V ii p 413).
He married Catherine the daughter of Simon Barrett and was buried beside her in Shelton cancel. In his tomb are a marker and the arms of Shelton and Burgullion quartered and Shelton and Barrett impaled.
He left John his son and heir aged 17 who had livery in 1427.
K.M. Brown lists him as 18th Lord due an extra Ralph and John that she has.
if Sir Ralph junior died in 1424 (and not 1414 as Copinger says) and William died in 1422 then William was never Ralph's successor.
However he was possessed of the Shelton manor in 1420 as stated by Blomefield.
The Norfolk Record Society says that he died July 1421 (and Sir Ralph 25 April 1424).
