  • Notes
    • I have found several Helms/Hellems/Helmes/Hellums that may be the children of Jane. I also believe that the Solomon Helmes that I found in the 1840 C. Of Campbell Co., may have been her husband. I have not found him anywhere else since the 1840 C. There is a Joel Helmes listed near him, and also Thomases. I believe that these may be the family of Jane but am at a lose to prove it. I am not sure if Thomas is Jane's last name. This information comes from an elderly relative, the son of Andrew Jackson Norton, Jr. and may not be correct. I have been unable to verify this.

I have a copy of a very dark, hard to read piece of paper that my cousin Rusty Mozley said was found in the attic of Alma Norton after her death. Alma was the daughter of Crawford Norton, my great-grandmother Ada Norton Mozley's brother. I don't know who wrote this paper, but it says (I think) that the mother of Jane Helms was Martha Jane Thomas and that someone was a stowaway on a ship and was sold for her passage and that her brother bought her. My cousin Gloria Higgins said that it looks like to her that may have been Martha Jane's MOTHER who was sold for her passage. I can not find anything to confirm this, nor anything about a ship. Ernest said that her parents sailed from England and she was to be left behind, but she wanted to see her brother so badly that she slipped on board the ship and hid. She was found and sold for her passage. I don't know what the truth is.

It was not an uncommon occurrance for someone to make an agreement with the ship's captain to be sold as an indentured servant for their passage. It seems possible that this may have been the case. The story, as it was told to my mother by her grandmother Ada, was that Jane Helms Norton was the person who was the stow-away and who was sold for her passage. She was bought by a man who did so because she was from the part of England that he was from. She told him that he would not be sorry that he bought her, that she would work hard to pay him back. He told her that she didn't have to work for him, that he bought her to see if she knew anything about his family. She asked him who his family was and when he told her, she said that those were her parents. This was told to my mother as a true story and it is the same one that my Grandfather, Lowell Mozley, was told growing up. Uncle Quill, Granddaddy's brother confirmed that they were told this by their mother, the granddaughter of Jane Helms McGouirk Norton. Ada was raised by Jane after her mother's death when Ada was 8 years old.

In the book DOUGLAS COUNTY GEORGIA, FROM INDIAN TRAIL TO INTERSTATE 20, Pg. 398, Selections from Mt. Carmel Primitive Baptist Church, Minutes of 1849-1888. List of members dismissed , excluded, and deceased: there is a Jain Helms listed, no other notation. The dates used for others is 1853 and 1854. July 13, 1851: Jane Hellums recieved by letter. This is not Jane Helms who married George Washington McGouirk -they were married in 1845. So this must be her mother, Jain or Jane. Jane Helms, age 68, is #825/725 in the 1860 Census of Campbellton, Campbell Co., Ga. There is a Jane Helms listed in the Mortality Schedule of 1869/1870 dying of pleurisy. This mortality schedule lists her age as 86, but in the previous censuses she was born c. 1791. We do not know where she is buried. I believe that she is probably buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, but there is no record of that. The reason that I believe this is that she was a member of that church as was her daughter Jane and Jane's husband, Andrew Jackson Norton. Gene Norton has erected a headstone for Jane and AJ near where he was told by a relative that they were buried. This relative was supposed to have witnessed their burial.
