      He was educated with James VI to whom, on 15 October 1580, he was appointed a Gentleman of the Bedcamber. In August 1582 he took part in the Raid of Ruthven and, on 5 August 1600, was in attendance on the king at the time of the so-called Gowrie conspiracy.
      He was M. P. for Perth in 1585, 1592, 1593, 1597 and 1600. In 1590 he was appointed a Commissioner of Justiciary for pursuit of the 'wicked Clan Gregor'. Having inherited from his father the lands of the Abbey of Inchaffray in Strathern, of which he was Commendator, he obtained the erection of the same into a temporal Lordship, and was created, on 31 January 1609, Baron Maderty.
      His wife was Jean Chisholm, daughter of Sir James Chisholm, of Cromlix, by Jean, daughter of Sir John Drummond, of Innerpeffray, with whom he obtained the Barony of Innerpeffray, being her mother's portion. She died before 26 November 1603 when her will was proven, and he in September 1623
