  • Notes
    • Walter Crow was the son of John and Martha Newman Crow. John and Martha married Oct. 18, 1713 by Banns by Richard Sewell; and it is registered by Thomas Powell, Clerk of North Sassafras Parish - Cecil Co. MD. Walter's birth is recorded there in the North Sassafras Parish: Walter Crow, son of John and Martha, born Aug. 23, 1717.

      Walter marries Ann Miller and we find them living in New Castle Co. DE. Not much is known about how or when they got there but we do know that the family moved to VA either in late 1763 or early 1764. New Castle Co. is directly across the state line from Sassafras Parish, MD where he was born.

      As generally accepted, six children were born in New Castle Co. They were;
      Mary, b. ca 1742
      James, b.ca 1744
      John, b. ca 1751
      William, b. ca Nov. 8, 1755
      Benjamin, b. ca 1757
      Jacob, b. ca April 3, 1759.

      Walter operated a tavern called "The Sign of the Tun" in New Castle Co. DE until about 1764.
      General Geo. Washington noted in his diary that he dined there in 1777. This was after Walter left.
      You may find the Memoir of John Finley Crow on: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~crow2000/jferowmemoirs.htm.

      John Finley Crow was the son of Benjamin Crow. John was sent north to live with his Uncle to study to become a minister. He founded Hanover College. He gives a detailed account of his family starting with his paternal grandfather, having emigrated from England, settled in St. George's Hundred, New Castle Co. DE. However, if his birth was recorded in North Sassafras Parish, I don't think he was an immigrant. His father, John Crow was probably the immigrant.

      Walter Crow moved (near the spot of where Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co. VA. later was built) to Augusta Co. VA; and was a member of the Church of England. He died in VA and later his widow moved to KY with some of her sons.
