  Thomas Bingham landed in Saybrook, Conn in 1659, with his mother after his father had died at sea. He was in Norwich, Conn in 1660, He moved to Windham, Conn in 1690-93. The family fled Eng for their lives, when Cromwell overthrew the throne. The Binghams for generations had been the favored blade makers for the ruling house in England, the favorite of Kings. The Binghams are in the Archives in Sheffield Eng in the Master Cutters Museam. We had the good fortune of being guests there in 1997 and we were treated warmly. Life size painting graces the main formal dining room of our latest Bingham who was a master cutter.. He was one of the first landed proprietors of Norwich, Conn. His house lot bears the date Apr 1660. His life in Windham caan be traced for 30 yrs. as a Sgt. Selectman, Deacon of the church. He was on the first list approved inhabitants of Windham in 1693. This Thomas had seven sons, all over six ft. tall and all lived long lives. All were religious men and puritanical in principle and were also known as singers and musicians. Thomas Bingham's baptism is recorded in the Sheffield, Eng. library in Sheffield Register. His tombstone in Windham, Conn reads as follows: HERE LIES YE BODY OF THAT HOLY MAN OF GOD DEACON THOMAS BINGHAM HE WAS YE SON OF MR THOMAS AND MARY BINGHAM LIVING IN SHEFFIELD IN YORKSHIRE,ENGLAND HE DIED JAN. 16TH 1729-30 IN YE 88 YEAR OF AGE.
