• Notes

  12th Earl of Buchan In London on 28 September 1809 he married Elizabeth Cole Shipley, daughter of Major General Sir Charles Shipley, Governor of Grenada, and they became the parents of nine children. His wife died on 5 October 1828 and, on 26 June 1830, he married Elizabeth Harvey while, on 21 July 1830, his right to the Peerage as Earl of Buchan was established in the House of Lords. He was Grand Master of the Freemasons for 1832-1833. By his second wife he fathered three more children and, when she died, he married a third time, on 26 June 1839, to Caroline Rose Stewart Maxwell, but no more children were born. He died in Londdon on 13 September 1857 while his widow survived him until 22 April 1893.
