  • Notes
    • - Buried In Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme, CT

There is a family story that claims that a grand parent (one of the greats) used to throw potatoes at suitors who came to call on the young women of the family. The area came to be known as Potato Hill, then 'Tater Hill, and is now called Tatar Hill in East Haddam.

A 'Tater Hill cemetery in East Haddam was laid out in 1760.

The 1880 census for Old Lyme, CT enumeration numbers are as follows:
      - House #104 and family #113 -Charles, Ella and George Mitchell & James Morris, Jr.
      - House #105 and family #114 -James Sr, Louisa, and Lilian A, Emma, Martha, Rosa, Louisa, Edith, Adeline.

It appears they lived next door to each other or across the street. My Aunt Judy tells me that Charles and Ella lived across from her parents, George and Susan Mitchell, at the end of Mill Lane next to the saw mill when she was a young girl. She says she used to eat supper there almost every day. My Aunt was born in 1919.

1920 Ct. Census shows George, Susan and children living on Laysville Road , Old Lyme Town, CT

1920 Ct. Census shows Charles and Ella living on Back River Road with their granddaughter, Bernice the oldest child of George and Susan. Aunt Judy says Bernice lived across the street from the Mitchells with her grandparents, the Morrises.

(As a matter of interest, there was a James Morris living in Canaan, Litchfield, CT in the 1840 and 1850 census. I cannot account for Ella's father, James, in either VT or the Lyme, CT area for those two years. Bernice later settled with her husband Bob Southwell who was from Cornwall Bridge, in Litchfield, Cty. A James S. Morris from CT married a Louisa (Ella's mother?) who was from CT and moved to NY with her father's family (Henry R. Coe). Ella was born in New York, and marriage records to a possible first wife (mother of James Jr., say James was of New York. Could this be my James and could this account for Bernice meeting and marrying someone from the Litchfield area and settling there as well?)

They may have moved after the 1880 census to separate addresses and then moved back near each other again by the time my Aunt Judy was a young girl, in the 1920's.
