  • Notes
    • The first mention of Baltus Barents in New York was at Flatbush, Long Island, November 25, 1663, where he, then 19 years of age had come with his family at least four years earlier.
Soon after their marriage they moved to Albany where Baltus had two married sisters. Then after living at Albany about six years, the family moved about 1682 to Bergen, New Jersey, where Tryntje's father owned 25 morgens (about 50 acres) of land. The family lived at Bergen at least five years.

In 1686, Robert Sanders of Albany (who was married to Baltus' sister) and Myndert Harmense Van der Bogert were granted,
as partners, 12,000 acres of land at the present site of Poughkeepsie, New York. They were given the grant by virtue of a
deed from the Indians a year earlier. On June 9, 1687 at the home of Myndert Harmense van der Bogert, in Albany, a lease for 48 acres at the site the Indians called "Mennisink and Poghkepesing" was given to "Baltus Barent Cleek." The lease was to run ten years. So it was that the following spring Baltus VanKleek built of stone the first actual dwelling at Poughkeepsie.

The first house built by Baltus VanKleek was small and may have only been used as a summer home by the family. In 1697, the last year of his lease, Baltus sold his holdings at Bergen, New Jersey and purchased the land at Poughkeepsie, on which he had built. In 1702 he built a large two story house of stone, connecting it in the back to the original structure. On the stone lintel above the door he carved "1702 B VK T VK" the date of the completion of the house and his and his wife's initials. The house was torn down in 1835 to make way for progress but the stone lintel was saved by the family and can still be seen in Poughkeepsie.

In 1700, "Baltus Van Cleet" was listed as Captain off a Militia Company consisting of men from Ulster and Dutchess counties. In the 16th Colonial Assembly held in the summer of 1715, he represented Dutchess county. He was re-elected in 1716 to a term of eleven years but served only until the spring of 1717 when he died
In 1718 a lot was granted in the name of Baltus VanKleek in "behoof of the Inhabitance and Naborhood of Pochkepsen aforesaid to bild and maentaen a proper mieting house to worship."

The origin of the name Van Kleek is not understood. At least two of Baltus' sisters were called van Harlem for the city in Holland where they were Baptized, as was the Dutch custom. The first time the name Van Kleek appears is at the Baptism of Peter, son of Baltus Barentse. Baltus evidently invented the name at that time and the meaning is buried with him. The name Van Kleek is unique to his descendents.
