  • Notes
    • James was a farmer and miller by trade. He served as Constable in the militia in 1767. The 150 acres land he received from his father in Beverley Manor, SC, he sold to Mathias Gabert in 1769. James' mother, Agness, released her dower of the land which adjoined brothers Samuel and Robert's land. (CL-468)
Persons listed in his will, Augusta Co., VA, Will Book VII, pg. 292, are in this abstract by Dr. Robert Frey. "16 Nov 1790: To Agnes Miller, wife to Wert Miller, daughter to George Glenn; to James Glenn, son to George Glenn; to William Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Sarah Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Martha Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Hugh Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Mary Glenn, daughter to George Glenn, infant; to Margaret, Esther, Elizabeth, Martha, John, James, William Bing, children to John Bing; to son-in-law George Glenn, to son-in-law John Bing, executors. Teste: Robert Young, Jr (probable nephew).; Robert Young, Sr. (probable brother); Sarah Young (Sister in law, daughter or grandaughter?). Proved 21st December 1790, by all witnesses. George Glenn and Wm. Young qualified."
I have guessed at the Young relationships, because James Young did not bequeth anything but to grandchildren of two daughters. This says to me that he probably had no sons, his wife was deceased, and he was too old to still have parents. (CL-185) His will is as follows. To Agnes Miller, wife to Wut Miller, daughter to George Glenn; to James Glenn, son to George Glenn; to William Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Sarah Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Martha Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Hugh Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Mary Glenn, daughter to George Glenn, infant; to Margaret, Esther, Elizabeth, Martha, John, James, William Bing, children to John Bing; to son-in-law John Bing, executors. Teste: Robert Young, Jr.; Robert Young, Sr.; Sarah Young. Proved, Dec. 21, 1790. George Glenn and Wm. Young qualified. (Note that these Glenn grandchildren are listed in the indentical order in Hugh Glenn's family bible and that Mary is by no means an infant at the time. The original will needs to be restudied, instead of the transcription this was taken from. CL-185)
To further complicate matters, in Robert Curry's will dated 1803, he lists his Teste's as James Young, Sr. and Andrew Young. This James Young is probably a nephew of the above James Young that died in 1790. I'm guessing that Andrew is his brother. Robert Curry's mother was Sally Young who again could be a sister to this James, Sr. and Andrew. (CL-185)
