    • Born in Pretoria, he was descended, on his mother's side, from the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief. As a young man he fought in several native campaigns and in 1887 became Mining Commissioner in Heidelburg, Transvaal. During the War he displayed considerable daring and skill in the Orange Free State and in the Western Transvaal. Badly wounded in action near Lake Chrissie, he became a member of the Executive Council of the Republic and, upon the death of General Spruyt, was appointed to take his place. He died in Heidelberg.

      PR Viljoen wat die Vrede van Vereniging dokument onderteken het names Heidelberg was generaal Piet Retief Viljoen *1853.07.25, kleinseun van die Voortrekkerleier Piet Retief. Sy moeder was Magdalena Margetehe Retief *1820.11.15, wie se handtekening op 'n grot in Natal aangebring was tydens die Groot Trek. Toe die Engelse magte Barberton oorrompel het, gen gel Viljoen met sewe man ontsnap, en spoedig daarna weer 'n kommando van 300 man onder hom gehad. Hy is swaar gewond in die slag by Chrissiemeer, en daarna ingesweer as lid van die Uitvoerende Raad van die ZAR. Na die Engelse oorlog het hy 'n leidende rol in Heidelberg, Tvl, gespeel.
