  • Notes
    • From pattywoo-at-ix.netcom.com:
Henry C. and George Washington Garner who lived in District 12, Crow Creek Valley, Franklin Co, TN. They had a brother named Billy Garner who lived across the mountain in a different District but still in Franklin Co, TN. Supposedly they had a brother named John Garner who lived in Rutherford Co, TN and who was the grandfather of John Nance Garner.

WFT Vol 4 #1599 gives this John Nance Garner, b. 15 Jun 1810, as "John Nance Garner II" son of John Nance Garner I son of Obadiah Garner & Elinor Nance with no dates given for John Nance Garner I, they continue the extra generation all the way to U.S. Vice President John Nance Garner whom they call John Nance Garner IV. The VP was actually John Nance Garner III, & this John Nance Garner, b. 15 Jun 1810 is actually the first of that name, born to Obadiah Garner & Elin Nance.
REF: "Garners of Texas A Personal History" by Bascom N. Timmons, Harper & Bros. Publishers, New York, avail. at San Augustine (TX?) Public Library & Houston, Harris Co, TX library: Said John Nance Garner was "Scotch in the male line & Welsh in the other." Mentions the Garners were a well-off family that had "found the way to education & business success" & had fought for both the King vs. the French & for Geo. Washington vs. the King. Also mentions the Garners "had moved west on the outer rim of advancing civilization" but were "not without roots". Book mentions the TN-TX migration may have been influenced by TN Gov. Sam Houston being a hero worshipper of Andrew Jackson & blazing a trail for TX, much effecting the developing philosophy of the early TX settlers.
